Has taking a balloon ride in the Rockies been on your 'bucket list'. If not, it probably should be. The many people who have taken these rides go out of their way to say how beautiful the experience was.

Ballooning over the San Juans

Ballooning offers the exciting journey of a lifetime carried by “magic carpets” filled with hot air that can reach more than 100 feet in height. Climb aboard to fly at the speed of wind from tree tops to thousands of feet high revealing panoramic views of gorgeous scenery. The San Juans in springtime is one of the most beautiful places in the world. There’s no better way than ballooning to experience and celebrate the coming of spring and summer in the lush forests and mountains around the San Juan Skyway.

The annual Telluride Balloon Festival offers just such sights as colorful hot-air balloons take to the skies above the town to take in the spectacular scenery of southwest Colorado. Unless gusty wind conditions keep balloons grounded, this festival is always held on the first weekend of June. Not to be left behind in hot air ballooning in the San Juans, for decades hot-air balloons rising from Ridgway have been sailing over the San Juans near Telluride, Ouray and Montrose. Once visitors riding in a thatched basket have glided over the region’s vaulted mountains, twisting rivers, ochre canyons and golden plains, they get hooked forever on seeing Colorado’s landscape this way. Flights typically last between one and four hours.

Balloon departures are all over mountain towns along the San Juan Skyway. Visit places like Pagosa Springs in summertime and the blue skies seem full of balloons. The 2.5 million acres of wilderness and national forest areas around Pagosa that hikers, bikers, horseback riders and fishermen visit in various seasons are all spread out beneath balloon excursions. There is no better way to explore Pagosa’s more than 650 miles of trails, waterfall hikes and other outdoor attractions. During an hour long flight the pilot usually ascends to an altitude that provides passengers with a great overview of the surrounding terrain, often at treetop level that not only exposes details of the terrain but also frequent sightings of wildlife.

Besides the thrills and joys of ballooning, in the San Juans and all over Colorado in the months between spring and even winter visitors can experience balloon festivals. One of the most unique is the Snowdown Balloon Rally in and around Durango. For this event, the Denver & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad (D&SNGRR) run the Snowdown Balloon Rally Train. The train stops in Animas Valley for passengers to see the very colorful hot-air balloon mass ascension. Passengers can view the mass ascension from the comfort of heated train coaches or get off the train for 15-20 minutes to get a better view of the balloons. Afterwards the train continues to Cascade Canyon for a short break by the Animas River before returning to Durango. Another balloon festival event in Durango, for the Durango Balloon Glow hot air balloons light up the sky in Downtown Durango in front of the Train Depot. From balloon inflation to lift-off, the event is one of the town’s most enjoyable family events.
